In the future, the cities’ role and significance grows when it comes to solving the global challenges in society. The City of Helsinki wants to boost inter-city cooperation, which is needed to solve global problems.

The global problems of the future are solved in cities. Helsinki is a prime example of the problem solving capabilities of cities: we tackle challenges by testing novel approaches boldly with citizens.

Helsinki's solutions for sustainable urban development were presented during Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU from 1 July to 31 December 2019. In October 2019, the City of Helsinki invited decision-makers, researchers and urban policy influencers to the first Helsinki Impact Conference

“Cities create opportunities for smooth and good every-day life. They are trendsetters and a platform for the most important solutions of a sustainable future when it comes to energy production, development of balanced neighbourhoods or digitalisation that improves services”, reminds Mayor Jan Vapaavuori of Helsinki, who opened the Conference.

As a result of the conference, the leaders of Helsinki, Stockholm and Tallinn, as well as the European collaboration networks for cities and metropolitan areas EUROCITIES and Metrex signed a declaration, in which they commit to advancing a solution to global challenges.

“The cooperation between cities and learning from each other is indispensable, when we want to find solutions to burning issues. The pace both in the climate actions and in the construction of socially equitable cities must be stepped up from what it has been thus far”, emphasised Deputy Mayor Anni Sinnemäki, who signed the declaration on behalf of the City of Helsinki.

In the declaration, the signatories commit to advancing:

  1. Combating climate change
  2. Working towards a human-centric digital transition and ethical use of technology
  3. Improving urban environments through spatial planning
  4. Enabling social equality and more inclusive cities, as well as
  5. Strengthening the role of cities as innovation platforms.
