Cities will play increasingly significant roles in solving global challenges. Helsinki wants to be a forerunner in local implementation of global responsibility. As the first city in Europe, Helsinki is committed to voluntary reporting to the UN on progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
As Helsinki grows and becomes more international, it needs to progress in a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable manner.
The greatest challenges of our times, ranging from climate change to widening segregation, have long since become more than national concerns. It is no longer possible to solve our challenges by national measures alone. A significant part of solutions are produced on local level. The role of cities becomes enhanced as pragmatic and grass-roots actors.
As the first city in Europe, Helsinki reports to UN on its implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals
In 2015, the UN member states agreed upon goals and an agenda for sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda aims toward eliminating extreme poverty and facilitating sustainable development that takes the environment, the economy and people into consideration in equal measure.
Helsinki wants to be a pioneer for local implementation of global responsibilities. In September 2018, the city, being after New York the second city in the world and the first one in Europe to do so, thus made a commitment to report voluntarily to the UN on its implementation of the sustainable development goals.
Our strategy features several goals through which Helsinki takes part in promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The first part of the reporting was finished and published in April, 2019. The final report From Agenda to Action – The Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Helsinki 2019 was published in June 2019 and was handed over to the UN in July.
